Does it get better as engine speed increases? Carbs need frequent rebuilds so you may be due.

no its the same. when i stop at a red light or stop sign it cuts off. when i crank it back up and put it in drive it backfires and cuts off, so i have to rev it a little and then put it in gear.. lol i think it needs a rebuild and a tune.

If your still using the vera jet 2. I would say like my did you need to get new floats. I would bet that your mpg sucks big time right now. The damn float is made of crap. It's not brass but are some black poly material it brakes down over time and you guessed it it sinks. I've had to change mine once every two years. here it costs $20 for rebuild kit plus $8 for the float.

Sounds like a carburetor rebuild wouldn't hurt...

I had the same problem with my 85 and I rebuilt the carb since it had not been done ever and it runs like a dream now. My truck only has 105k on it now and it sits most of the year. My problem was not the black poly floats but the needle valve inside the fuel bowl was sticking pretty bad. I think I am about to put the first set of plugs into this truck as well. I know plenty of people that don't like the 2.8 but I can't kill this one and it has done some serious work over the years(this thing has towed all kinds of stuff including a bobcat or two).

I would try rebuilding that carb and you should be good to go again but don't forget to change that fuel filter!
