craving a ty

Postby eb0b » Wed Feb 15, 2006 5:17 am

I've been doing alot of research on typhoons And I am looking at getting one sometime in the near future. I have always heard horror stories about turbo engines with high mileage. The one I am look at is 93 red for $7,900 w/ 98,865 miles on it. My main question is Have any of yall with the higher mileage sy/ty had too many problems. I realize all cars are gonna detererate over time reguardless of upkeep. just curious what yalls take on it was..

One last thing isn't there a way to find the production number based off of the Vin?

All depends. If well maintained, launched infrequently by PO's, and if you plan to drive it gently, then it will be no more unreliable than any similar vintage/mileage S10 (which means stuff will be wearing out and breaking fairly regularly... but the normal stuff, having nothing to do with the turbo).

If PO's thrashed it or maintained it poorly, or if YOU plan to thrash it, expect to spend a lot of time and money on it.

There are guys with over 200k mi on original engine, turbo and tranny.... but it is rare, because folks generally don't want to rack up that much mileage on a stock truck, or they modify, break stuff and put in new turbos/engines etc.

Launches kill trannys and propshafts, so if you know that the owner raced the truck or launched at every light, it may be wise to keep looking. Another thing that will help transmission life is to keep the truck in D instead of OD, because it creates more line pressure on the 1-2 clutches, it will keep them from exploding. Use OD only when you need 4th gear. Good luck with the Ty!
