Crank and rod question.

Postby 89shortbox » Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:43 pm

Is there anything different about the crank and rods in a '91 4.3 compared to a Sy/Ty motor??
Im going to be doing a turbo charged setup and Im curious. Im willing to upgrade parts but I dont want to if its not necesary. Going to be aiming for 400-425 rwhp.

Thanks in advance.

Crank and rods are standard 4.3 LB4 fare. A popular SyTy upgrade is to L35 rods, which are stronger. SyTy differences are nodular iron main bearing caps and lower compression hypereutectic pistons. 15 psi to a standard 4.3 rotating assembly = detonation and very short life unless run on race fuel or well-tuned alky injection.
Most SyTy engine builds aiming for that power go to JE or SRP forged pistons (8.5:1), Eagle rods and 4-bolt splayed bearing caps. Stock crank is generally considered OK to that power level.
